| New Rs 5 coin to commemorate Shastri`s birth centenary | | | AGENCIES MUMBAI, Oct 1: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), today said it would put into circulation new coins of Rs 5 to mark the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The weight of the ferritic stainless steel (FSS) coin would be 6 grams and it would be circular in shape with security edges, the RBI said in a release issued here. The coins would comprise 83 per cent iron and 17 per cent chromium. The edge of the coin shall be security-edged on periphery. The coin is a legal tender as provided in the Coinage Act, 1906, the release said adding that the existing five rupee coins in circulation shall continue to be legal tender. |
