EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 1: The J&K climbers, keeping the state flag flying high, have won the North Zone Sport Climbing Championship trophy for the fourth time in a row making it at top of the points tally earning highest 37 through 16 medals they won in the event which held at Nainital Mountaineering Club, Nainital in Uttrakhand. The medals tally included, seven gold, as many silver and two bronze. Overall second position holders, Delhi with 24 points out of 13 medals (G-4, S-3, B-6) won by them. Other teams from Indian Tibet Border Police (ITBP), Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand secured nine, seven, six and two points respectively. “Unlike last year, when J&K had completely dominated the competition, this time, the state climbers faced stiff competition against Delhi,” general secretary of Mountaineering Association of Jammu and Kashmir, Dr C K Khajuria told SAN on team’s return from Uttrakhand. Junior girls from the state led by Harjot Kour won three gold medals in lead, speed and bouldering competitions thereby dominating in their group with Shivani Raj Kaith (gold and silver) and Anjali Adhikari (silver and bronze). Completely dominating the women’s category, J&K climbers won all the three gold and silver medals. Rohini Chib won two gold medals in lead and speed climbing as also silver in bouldering competition. Bhawna Sharma, a veteran climber won one gold medal in bouldering and a silver medal each in lead and speed events. In the junior boys lead competitions, J&K’s Rajiv Sharma and Anil Kumar won a silver and bronze medal while sub-junior boys lead climber, Akshay Kumar clinched a silver medal. “Princy Chowdhary and Ashish Kapoor, who secured fourth rank in sub-junior boys and girls categories, have been selected in the North Zone team for National competition to be held at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi from November 19 to November 23,” informed Ram Khajuria of Mountaineering Association of J&K, who was president of jury in the North Zone Championships. In all, 181 climbers from Uttrakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, ITBPF, Air Force, Army, NSG besides J&K participated in the four-day championships, organized by Nainital Mountaineering Club under the aegis of North Zone Sport Climbing Committee, New Delhi. Meanwhile, president of Mountaineering Association of J&K and Chief Electoral Officer, B R Sharma has congratulated the state team for excellent performance. Principal MNDP School, R S Pura, Anil Choudhary, who has constructed a climbing wall in the school, has also conveyed his congratulations to the team for winning the trophy for fourth time in a row. He announced that climbers of his school shall be suitable awarded at the annual function of the school.
