| Pak rejects new design forwarded by India on Kishen ganga | | | Islamabad, Sept 11 Pakistan today rejected the new design presented by India on the controversial Kishen ganga power project being built in Jammu and Kashmir, saying it does not address its concerns.
Also, the World Bank-appointed neutral expert is expected to deliver next month his interim verdict on another power project Baglihar, being built in Jammu and Kashmir, over the river Chenab which is being objected to by Pakistan.
"The new design (of Kishen ganga) forwarded by India also provides for diversion of water, which was our objection. That (the objection) stays there," Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told reporters here.
The new design of the project, being built on the river Kishen ganga, also known as river Neelum, was forwarded to Pakistan few months ago.
India had agreed to provide the new design of the power project to Pakistan last May in the wake of objections raised by Islamabad over its present structure.
On the Baglihar project, Pakistan had asked for arbitration by the World Bank under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. The Swiss expert Raymond Lafitte, appointed by the Bank to arbitrate, is expected to deliver his interim verdict next month.
Aslam said a meeting between Lafitte and the two sides was expected to take place next month on Baglihar project. "We expect an interim decision which will be referred to the two governments for their comments. We expect a final decision by the end of this year," she said. |
