| Katra abuzz with Navratra festivity | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Oct 5: The Navratra Festival- 2008 being organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and J&K Tourism Department in collaboration with various local organizations entered into fifth day on Saturday. An attractive procession reflecting different facets of rich cultural heritage of the state was taken out from Asia crossing Katra last evening. Director Tourism, Sarita Chouhan who was the chief guest on the occasion, lit the sacred Jyoti before the start of colourful procession. The procession after passing through main locations of the holy town culminated at Higher Secondary School Katra. Various Jhankies like traditional Dangal and Kud by Khem Raj & party, Dogra Joint family, Itarsi Band and various scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata were the main attraction of the procession. Different scenes of Jhankies were so tastefully decorated that no one could resist himself to give repeated applause and slogans in praise of goddess Durga. Former Minister Jugal Kishore Sharma, S.S.P. Reasi Verinder sharma, Joint Director Tourism S.M. Sahni, S.D.M. Katra Ram Rattan Sharma, Dy. Chief Executive Officer, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Katra, Verinder Slathia, President Travel Association Katra , Surinder Khajuria, and members of Navratra Festival Committee were present on the occasion. In All India Devotional Song Competition, being organized at Yog Asharm Katra as a part of Navratra Festival, Rabjot Singh of Jammu was adjudged as best singer and awarded a cash prize amounting Rs.25000 while as Rs.3000 and Rs.2000 as second and third prize were given to Saravjeet Singh and Sham Manyal respectively for their outstanding performance in the competition last evening. Himani Kapoor of Faridabad, a renowned playback singer of Bollywood, and winner of the prominent All India Devotional Song Contest 2004, gave her guest performance by singing melodious Bhaints in front of jam-packed gathering at Yog Asharm last evening which were highly appreciated by the audience. In another event, artists of Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, enthralled thousands of pilgrims, including locals, by their superb cultural performances based on colourful folk dances and songs in the premises of Govt. Higher Secondary School Katra. |
