We condemn, first!
10/6/2008 12:56:03 PM
Dr Rakesh Sharma
This has become rather fashionable, if not a style statement and there seems to be a never ending race as to who does the all so glorified act of condemnation first. But do these people (ones in power) ever try to empathise with the people who are at the receiving end of the violence. Do they ever try to introspect and understand that if at all there is somebody who is responsible for these diminutive acts besides of course the ones who do it, it is them, it is they who surely enjoy all the luxuries and priorities of being in power but quite comfortably disown the responsibilities if not throw the blame on the others.
Will this redundancy of condemnation ever be replaced by acts that prevent any violence that warrants condemnation? Will our, all so politically correct leaders ever espouse with the common man’s grievances? Now if you ask me, that’s a million dollar question.
Some may say in today’s times the greed and hatred that has percolated down into the society has made it practically impossible to make the cessation of violence a possibility ,and there may well be a valid point in there ,but if turning a blind eye was the answer to a problem then it would be practically impossible to hang on to this never ending hope and the firm belief that some kind of a divine intervention shall intervene and awaken the sanity within us and the perpetrators of violence, that there is an end to everything and everyone, and history is a strong witness to this.
After all there is always a downhill after a peak and nothing goes beyond this truth of life and above all this is only human to dispel anything that tends to stay for too long, no matter how good or bad it is.
But violence!! Do we need to or can we afford to wait for that long that it dies its natural death? Atrociously dangerous would be this proposition. So what is it that needs to be done, apart from of course the condemnation bit (pun intended).
The realisation that each and everyone of us needs to play an active role to ensure that the ones who follow that path need to be corrected by logic more than by force, as that rarely happens because one can suppress the weak with force but most of the others they come back even stronger.
Well I must confess that writing a column about all this is perhaps as good if not as bad and as monotonous as the acts of condemnation which are more or less ritualistic now a days and also ill-equipped to address the issue .
So finally do we have an answer to all this? Perhaps not. But the least that we can expect from ourselves is to be constantly aware of one’s soft spots and be watchful enough not to let anyone exploit that and this perhaps can go a long way in contributing to check violence.
As far as the men (and women)that matter goes let us all leave it to them to decide where they draw a line and come actually good to justify the word leadership ,not just by talking but by acts. May be they also need some kind of a realisation that enough is enough and that one can fool people sometimes but not all the time, and may be it was possible to get away with things in the past, but in today’s times when even a righteous act can give person a run for his money, it might be a slightly tough proposition to get away with something that is actually wrong.
Some might contest that it is very easy to criticise someone rather than empathising and actually thinking as to whether anyone else could have done a better job. After all, if the word leader was to be factually correct, then it would really be a big challenge in today’s times, to actually be one and back it up with acts that may be look more closer to reality than a mere eye wash and may be a little more than these acts of condemning the violence!
