EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 5: Formally launching second phase of campaign for assertion of Jammu in political process, the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) today called upon the people to make a careful choice of vote in forthcoming assembly elections.
“Candidates voted to in the previous elections failed to come upto expectations of the people of Jammu…they proved to be Jaichands…elections are again round the corner and this is the time to make right choices and right decisions”, said SAYSS convener Leela Karan Sharma while addressing a function to honour the families of those died or otherwise suffered during the recent agitation on Amarnath land row. Leader of Vishva Hindu Parishad, Praveen Togadia was a special guest on the occasion which was attended by over 500 participants.
Leela Karan said that two month-long agitation on Amarnath land controversy had been a renaissance of the sorts for people of Jammu as it awakened them to the challenges of discrimination. He pointed out that the restoration of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board was just the beginning while Jammu has a long battle to fight to have its say in the political process and decision making system.
He asked people to exercise their right in the forthcoming assembly elections and ensure that only those people are elected who can work for the case of Jammu. “The task before us now is to fight against the discrimination with Jammu region by Kashmiri rulers”, said Leela Karan.
Lambasting the Centre for being lenient to the militants, the Vishaw Hindu Parishad (VHP) national president Dr Praveen Togadia today demanded the implementation of Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) to deal with the bug of terrorism in the country.
'''It was just the beginning of militancy in the year 1990, when it started from Kashmir, I warned the Centre to be alert but no attention was paid to my words. Now the disease (militancy) had gripped the entire country, which immediately required to be cured,'' Dr Togadia said, while addressing the gathering at a function organised here by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti.
''Implementation of POTA at the earliest is the only solution to tighten the noose against the rising militancy as mercy to the anti-national elements is of no benefit to the country,'' the VHP president added. ''The militants should be eliminated or arrested and also be punished under strict laws, which will help in fighting militancy,'' Dr Togadia added.
The Samiti paid homage to the people who were killed during the two-month long Jammu agitation for return of a plot of land to a Hindu temple trust in the Kashmir Valley.Twelve people were killed during the agitation in Jammu, which was sparked off when the state government rescinded its the May 26 land allotment order awarding 40 hectares of forest land for use during the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
The SASS paid Rs.400,000 to the next of kin of each killed during the agitation and awarded them citations “for act of bravery”.
