10/7/2008 12:44:38 PM
SANDEEP BHAT
Jammu, Oct 6: Few are though trying to understand the exact meaning of terrorism and how it is different from militancy, for a while, the maverick Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is a hero of the vocal majority in Jammu and Kashmir.
In his interview to the Wall Street Journal, Zardari was candid enough to describe militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir as terrorists. This statement has landed him in deep soup in Pakistan but in Jammu and Kashmir there is a debate for the good. Advanced dictionaries say that in international political parlance there are as many as 122 different meanings of terrorism. However, in today’s world the best and the widely held is one defined by America.
Barring Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic and the usual diplomatic overtone of Omar Abdullah, everyone is out to hail Zardari and describe his statement as sensible. EARLY TIMES spoke to a cross section of political leaders to know their reactions on Zardari’s foot in mouth statement.
“This (militants as terrorists) may be Zardari’s personal statement and I have almost nothing to comment on this”, National Conference president Omar Abdullah told EARLY TIMES. Omar’s silence on Zardari’s statement is obvious in view of his Kashmir constituency and seeking balance in Jammu region. His arch rival Mehbooba Mufti, however, has very little to be diplomatic as she sees the state lacking application of mind.
The Convener of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti Leela Karan Sharma while talking this reporter said, it is a positive step and every peace loving people should welcome it. He said, Pakistan itself is a worst victim of terrorism and when there is any terrorist attack, people here feel sorry for the victims. He urged upon president Zardari to curb militancy with iron hand, so that people feel secure and free from militants.
PDP General Secretary, Dhaman Bhasin said, the statement of president Zardari is right step in right direction, as it will open doors for both India and Pakistan to come more closer so that all the issue are settled in a peaceful manner. He said India never treated Pakistan as its enemy, but always wanted to have cordial relation.
Senior congress leader and former minister G.S Charak while commenting on Zardaris statement said, it sis bold statement, ever made by any Pakistani leader. He said Pakistan has now realized that the role played by militants in J&K for the least over 19yrs gave nothing except destruction, loot and killing. He asked Pak politicians belonging to various parties avoid confrontation and work for peace and development.
Shiekh Abdul Rehamn ex MP and senior leader of Samajwadi party welcomed the bold statement of president Zardari. He said it is now upto Zardari how to face domestic problem, though we hail the statement. He said both India and Pakistan have to work together to get rid of which is very important for both the countries. Fighting of wars between each other on non-issue is going to solve any problem. He said both India and Pakistan work together for over all development, like Europian union confederation, and liberise visa etc. Pakistan should complete by wipe out militancy from its soil and whole-heartedly solve all problem democratically. His statement on militancy is welcome steps.

Prof Hari Om, spokesman BJP said president Asif Zardarie’s remarks on militancy in J&K vindicate the BJP stand. He said Pakistan has now realized that militancy is no solution, even zardari is its victim. He further said that if zardari is true to his statement he should crack down on militant camps in PoK and other areas of Pakistan. He said India always wants to have bilateral relation with Pakistan and now president of Pakistan has realize that India is no threat.
