Conflict changing social system in Valley
10/7/2008 11:23:12 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 7: Over the past two decades, Kashmiri society has changed drastically in such a way that finding a suitable match for eligible bachelors has become a nightmare for the families. The dream of getting married has just remained a dream in Kashmir, warns experts
"Despite the startling rise in number of unmarried men and women in the group of 35- 42, this social problem has not received due attention," reiterates noted Sociologist, Prof B.A Dabla
Prof Dabla further maintains that unemployment crisis, increasing number of deaths, mainly boys, due to violence and degenerating moral fabric of the society amply demonstrates decreasing number of prospective grooms and late marriages.
The study ‘late marriages in Kashmir' undertaken by the department of sociology University of Kashmir, points out that 65% of youth who had attained the age of marriage lost their life in the turmoil.
Furthermore, social factors are equally responsible for this late marriage crisis. Seeking all qualities in a prospective spouse has further aggravated the problem. It's like walking on a tight rope. Income, caste, and status everything cannot be up to mark. At the same time there is an estimated three lakh unemployed youth, the statistics enough to frighten us.
Ordeal of sufferings does not end here. Experts opine that young men and women have become extremely selective about prospective partners in these economically trying times. Prospective brides and bride grooms prioritize only those spouses who are able to procure government job .Consequently those who works in private sector are unable to get suitable match.
Even worse, widows are also at the receiving end. Research studies present varied statistics of widows in Kashmir. "Women in conflict'' a study conducted by the department of Sociology University of Kashmir reveals that 85% of widows are of marriageable age, yet only 1% has remarried though most of them wish to start a new life.
Late marriages which are an increasing reality in Kashmir have shown spurt in various health related problems. Late marriages affect married life in several ways, especially among women whose child bearing abilities reduces drastically with age due to hormonal changes.
"The ideal marriageable age is between 23- 27 years pregnancy before 20 and after 35 years fall within the high risk group,'' asserts Dr Zahida Nabi, Gynecologist. There is more to lament than comment.
This grave problem has an adversely affected our society which is why there is common occurrence of mental disorders and suicides among people who have crossed marriageable age limit. According to reliable sources, on an average three to four attempted suicide cases are admitted in the Valley's prime hospitals, SKIMS and SMHS.
