| Rs 1000 Crore reconstruction project underway | | Vohra remembers quake victims | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 7: A massive Central assistance of over Rs 1000 crore has largely been utilized on the temporary and permanent rehabilitation of the October 2005 earthquake victims of Jammu and Kashmir. The devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake at 8:50 GMT on October 8, 2005 had left 969 people dead in Jammu and Kashmir, mostly in the Uri-Karnah-Poonch belts and 784 injured. Bulk of the dead- 951 belonged to the border belts of Uri and Karnah in the Valley. The epicenter of the earthquake was Muzaffarabad, in the Himalayan foothills. On the third anniversary of the massive earthquake, the Governor, N. N. Vohra, shared the agonies of the bereaved families. He also reviewed the rehabilitation program for the affected people, undertaken by various agencies. As regards the temporary rehabilitation of the earthquake affected people, the Government provided Rs 131.72 crores to about 20694 house-holds for setting up temporary shelter units. Each household was provided with an assistance of Rs 30,000 plus an incentive of Rs. 5,000 for completing the construction before the onset of 2005-witner. Providing roofs to the affected families was one of the biggest challenges for the Government, keeping in view the chilly winter months. The Government also provided Rs 2.33 crore for raising educational infrastructure and providing sports material in the affected areas. |
