| No rule on roads: overcharging, overloading name of game | | | SANDEEP BHAT JAMMU, Oct 7: The recent hike in passenger fare have made commuters in a fix as some vehicle operators are found charging double the rate approved by the regional traffic authorities. This state of affairs has created unpleasant scenes on various routes in the region, and number of scuffle have been taken place between passengers and drivers/conductors. Women commuters, particularly the school and college going girls are the worst suffers, as the conductor's behaviour with them is not satisfactory. Beside they are not allowed to avail student concession already approved by the Government. Senior citizen also said in the same boat, and are treated badly in buses. The auto rickshaw owners are not for behind, they are found charging nearly 30% more than the actual fare, though there is no such order for auto-drivers to charge extra from passengers till date. This reporter on random who had a chat with number of daily commuters, found that there is a resentment among them in smooth functioning of city transport and also alleges that traffic department personal on duty at various places behave as a mute spectator and turns a deaf ear towards passengers when they complaint to them. A young office going lady Suman, said authorities are responsible in creating confusion as far as now rates are concerned. There is no check on vehicles, buses and always found over crowed and as such women folk have to suffer, off no fault of theirs. Priya a college student in her remarks said it becomes very difficult to travel in buses especially during peak houses. She suggested separate 'Ladies special', be introduced during peak hours, which will be a great relief for college and school going girl student. Beside there should be random checking inside the buses. Nikhil Bakshi, Computer Professional stressed for strict check on all vehicular traffic and buses, mini buses found over loaded be fined heavily beside road permit he cancelled. There is no check on speed. He said it is often found some vehicles, even two wheelers are playing on roads without registration. Authorities should keep strict watch on them and fine them. Reporter of this paper in a conversation with SSP traffic Parminder Singh on the subject said, there is no overloading in Trikuta Nagar route. Though Traffic police is doing yeoman job to check overloading. But it is pertinent to say that on majority of routes like Janipur, Talab-Tillo, Bakshi Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Bahufort, Gangyal and other areas, there is overloading in minibuses and mostly during peak hours.
