| EC in Valley, final call soon | | State may go to polls by mid-Nov | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 7: With the arrival of full Election Commission of India in Kashmir for last and final assessment exercise, political parties are expecting announcement of the assembly elections anytime towards middle of this month. The Election Commission of India, led by the Chief Election Commissioner, N. Gopalswami, today reached in Srinagar on a two day visit to make an assessment of the situation for the forthcoming elections to the J&K Assembly. The Election Commissioners, Navin Chawla and S Y Qureshi and two Deputy Elections Commissioners accompanied Gopalaswami. After a meeting with top officers of the state administration, the team is slated to have separate meeting with representative of all political parties in Srinagar tomorrow. Sources said that the activity is picking up for elections and announcements can be expected in the middle of this month. Reliable sources privy to various election related development told EARLY TIMES that Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections may be held in three phases beginning November 15 with the last phase of polling by or before December 5. The Commission will have consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs on availability of required strength of forces before making the formal announcement for elections. The Commission was briefed about the situation obtaining in the State by the Advisors to Governor, H. H. Tyabji, Dr SS Bloeria and C. Phunsog and Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu in separate meetings here this evening. The Commission will meet the representatives of political parties of the State tomorrow and obtain their views on holding of the elections. The Chief Secretary, SS Kapur and Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda will brief the Commission on law and order situation and the assessment of the administration for conduct of polls in the state tomorrow. |
