EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 8: Governor, Mr N N Vohra, has called for maintaining the referral care character of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences and simultaneously developing the peripheral health structure in Jammu and Kashmir
Chairing the 31st Governing Body meeting of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) here, the Governor also stressed the need for drawing a 15-20 years perspective plan for extending the reach of health-care to hitherto uncovered areas. This, he said, will ease the pressure on the major hospitals like SKIMS which can concentrate on providing specialized treatment to the needy.
Vohra, who is also the Chairman of the Governing Council, assured that the Government would put more funds and resources at the disposal of SKIMS for catering to the growing needs of patients, who have been thronging from all parts of the Valley for specialized treatment.
Director SKIMS, Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar, gave a review of the functioning of the Institute, emphasizing the increasing patient load in the Out-Patient-Department and Accident and Emergency. In the past eight months, approximately 4 lakh patients have visited the SKIMS, 12 lakh investigations have been done and thousands of radiological procedures had been undertaken.
Dr Zargar said that the continuing pressure on the OPD would progressively affect the quality of the care to more serious cases.
The Governing Council discussed various measures for further improving the functioning of the SKIMS and strengthening its diagnostic departments. The Council approved a new Drug Purchase Policy and discussed the mechanism for acquiring Machinery/Equipment for the Institute.
Among others present in the meeting were the Advisors to Governor, Dr. S. S. Bloeria and Mr. C. Phunsog, Chief Secretary Mr. S. S. Kapur, Financial Commissioner (Planning & Development) Mr. S. L. Bhat, Principal Secretary to Governor Mr. B. B. Vyas, Commissioner/Secretary Health, Mr. Atul Duloo besides Prof. G. Q. Allaqaband, Prof. Mehraj-u-Din and Prof. Rajinder Singh, members of the Governing Council.
