| CAT sets aside appointment of Roy as Maharashtra DGP | | | AGENCIES MUMBAI, Oct 8: In an embarrassment to the Maharashtra government, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today quashed the appointment of A. N. Roy as the state's Director General of Police (DGP), stating it was 'illegal' after he was picked for the top post superseding three officers. "This illegality cannot be perpetuated", the Tribunal said about Roy's appointment eight months back, and ordered that a new DGP for the state be appointed within a month. The order was given on an application by Director General (Home) Suprakash Chakravarthy, another senior IPS officer from the state, before the tribunal challenging Roy's appointment. Chakravarthy contended that Roy was made the DGP by superceding three other officers who were senior to him. The CAT observed that government was bound to consider these three senior most officers - Chakravarthy, S. S. Virk and J. D. Veerkar - as per the Supreme Court's earlier judgment. Roy will continue in his post for a month and within this time the government will have to take a fresh decision on a new appointment. The state government while defending Roy's appointment had contended before the tribunal during the course of hearing of Chakravarthy's application that the incumbent was the most meritorious officer in the state for the top post. Earlier in the day, Bombay High Court had dismissed a PIL challenging Roy's appointment on the same ground saying that the matter was pending before the CAT. |
