Join hands to win this battle
10/9/2008 10:28:11 PM
SADHNA GUPTA

Running successfully all over India, since 15th August, 1947-Terrorism. The alarm has started ringing, the red signal has been dispatched, boundaries have spread, and finally the terror is unleashing at a scale never before. From the valleys of Kashmir to the deserts of Rajasthan, from the mountains of Assam to the coasts of Maharashtra and from landlocked Madhya Pradesh to the Deccan Peninsula, entire nation has been targeted- thoroughly, deeply and furiously.
The terrorism in our country has taken a devastating shape, our sovereignty has been challenged and our democracy weakened.
The consistent failure of our intelligence institutes and internal security is clearly evident. In this game of blasts and killings, innovation remains the key, and that is exactly what we are failing to do. Despite having the best brains and toughest bones in our internal security and defence forces, we still are losing every battle fought. Lessons, in fact, need to be learnt from post-9/11 America and the way they have curtailed terrorism.
Even after making path-breaking progress in telecommunications why does India not have a 911 or 112 of its own? Why is still the bollywood style of 'police-after-tragedy' prevalent? Why are politics being played over lives? But, before putting forth a textbook of questions, the biggest one that arises is what are WE doing as citizens? Strikes, Bandhs, Agitations, Protests, Blame game? Is this our apposite role? Is this the duty of a democrat? The answer is a big fat NO.
Instead of helping the nation, we are making a mockery of our own system. Our loop-holes are being projected and weaknesses are targeted. It is further adding to the challenges of our forces, and thereby vitiating their efficiency.
The terrorism in Kashmir and the Amarnath land row, the blasts in bangalore and the attack on christians, the naxalites in West Bengal and Singur and Nandigram violence, they all seem to be perfectly symbiotic to each other.
It is highly unjustified and entirely unethical expecting the lives to be sacrificed at the borders while sitting in air-conditioned rooms and investing in shares and debentures. We are gifted democracy, this is the time we put it to judicious use. Charity begins at home, the alarm has just started ringing and the time to snooze has gone. The nation is calling us, our share is mandatory.
This is not merely a battle of defence forces or armed men, this is a battle of common man, or aam aadmi, as popularly known. This is the war we need to fight and this is the war we need to win, for this is the war that can bring us peace and this is the war that can return us our sovereignty. Instead of making tamasha of our democratic structure, let us be a unit. Let us not repeat the history, let politics take a back seat, let us not be divided and ruled again. This is our fight, let us win it. Let the common man wake up.
