| ‘Shortage to overcome by next year end’ | | 12.27 MG water short in Jammu per day: CE PHE | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 9: Tightening their laces to cater the shortage of water in Greater Jammu, PHE Department vowed to take long term measures on water scarcity. Speaking at the Hello DD program, PHE Chief Engineer V K Abrol said that despite ‘comprehensive’ schemes and plans implemented from time to time by the government and PHE department, still there was shortage of 12.27 Mega Gallon of water in Greater Jammu. Giving details, he informed that about 37 mega gallons of water is needed in Jammu per day but PHE was providing only 27.73 mega gallons of water per day. Various steps have already been initiated to overcome the problem, He added. Deliberating upon the measures, Abrol said that to overcome this shortage, Economical Reconstruction Agency (ERA) needed to dig 52 tube wells, of which 40 have been dug out, 5 have commissioned while remaining will be commissioned before the close of the current fiscal. With the start of phase Ist of Seitley Plant, some problem of water shortage has been sorted out, he added. Asserting that PHE department was committed to solve the water shortage problem in Jammu, Chief Engineer said, “the Government has devised short, medium and long term plans to overcome water shortage in Jammu city”. “The department has decided to generate water sources like Chenab from Akhnoor, Tawi river, which are the major source of water for the vast population of Jammu”, said Chief Engineer adding that the shortage of water in Jammu city and other areas of the entire state is likely to end by 2009 when several major water filtration plants are completed. |
