Early Times Report

Poonch, May 21: Two police officers in tehsil Mendhar of this district allegedly took two boxes of ice-cream from trucker by ostensibly threatening him to implicate him in a false case of carrying liquor.
Amid COVID-19 surge, where police have been working hard to extend help to people in lockdown some police officials are allegedly taking advantage of this situation by intimidating common people.
In one such incident, a trucker carrying ice-cream from Jammu to Mendhar was stopped after crossing Bhimber Gali by a police officer of ASI rank with his subordinate in his Red Maruti Car and started inquiry about him, a trucker alleged.
“The officer alleged that there are liquor bottles in the vehicle. I told them that I carry ice-cream from Jammu to Mendhar and I have crossed many nakas and my vehicle was checked. I told them that I was given entry in Poonch district after COVID-19 test, which was negative but the officer didn’t listen and started threatening me to implicate me in the liquor case,” the driver alleged.
“Although the police officer and his subordinate inspected the vehicle, they could not find anything illegal. Later they demanded two boxes of ice-cream to leave me,” he alleged.
He further alleged that there are some officers, who have adopted modus operandi by accusing the driver of the vehicle of having liquor bottles in his vehicle and taking commission from them. Meanwhile, the driver said that the police at Bhimber Gali naka were cooperative and after completing formalities he was allowed to move
He appealed to SSP Poonch to take strict action against such officers, who have been harassing common people in this pandemic.
Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Poonch told Early Times that he has taken a note of the matter and an inquiry will be held.
