EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, May 21: The dispensary established by Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) at Battal Ballian Industrial area in Udhampur for the benefit of industrial workers and other private employees is proving to be just wastage of money as no help or medical assistance is being provided here to those who are in dire need. Sources informed that the dispensary was established by the authorities so that the industrial workers who contribute an amount from their wages towards Employee State Insurance deposits may get free treatment and their long journey to ESIC Hospital in Bari Brahmana, Jammu about 80 kms from here, can be avoided. “Whenever we visit the dispensary we are informed that the doctor concerned is on leave,” Bhushan (name changed), 35, who works in an industrial unit informed. Another such industrial worker claimed that whenever he visits the dispensary he is informed that the medicine is out of stock.
The irked industrial workers said, “What is the purpose of employing a doctor who always remains on leave, making the poor industrial workers to suffer,” adding that sometimes even if the doctor is available in the dispensary, he ignores providing treatment.
They also said that in the wake of a spike in Corona cases the main hospital of ESIC at Jammu in Bari Brahmana has been converted into Covid hospital and it is not possible for them to visit Bari Brahmana Hospital for medical help. Executive Member of Association of Industries, Ragu Gandotra when contacted said that there are many problems in the dispensary for which the higher-ups in the system were informed many times but no action was taken to improve the things, adding that non-availability of the doctor in the dispensary is a permanent issue. “We urged the higher ups to provide at least 10 beds in this dispensary with proper staff including doctors for effective treatment and to provide maximum benefits to the industrial workers, who otherwise had to cover a long distance to reach Main ESIC Hospital at Bari Brahmana,” he said. When contacted ESIC State Vigilance In-charge agreed that all was not well in the dispensary but he said that till someone from industrial workers files a written complaint they are unable to act.
