AGENCIES
NEW DELHI, Oct 10: The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on Thursday approved the 123 agreement for signing, after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh explained to his colleagues that all the commitments made by the US had been met.
Foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee left for US on Thursday night to sign the agreement in Washington. The final step in the long-drawn process came after President George Bush signed the relevant law in a ceremony on Wednesday. According to sources, CCPA was told that commitment on uninterrupted fuel supply and technology transfer was in place while the strategic programme would remain unaffected.
It was said the IAEA inspections would be limited to reactors opened for the purpose under the separation plan. The ministers expressed satisfaction over the agreement and approved it for signing by Mukherjee in Washington. The government said the commitments made by US remained safeguarded after the signing statement by president Bush.
