Baglihar may prove darkness under lamp: Goni
10/10/2008 10:23:34 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 10: Congratulating the people of Jammu and Kashmir on commissioning of Baglihar hydro-electric power project by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, senior National Conference leader and former Advocate General Mohammad Aslam Goni has said that due to negligence of the previous coalition government that project may well prove as proverbial "darkness under lamp".
In a statement, Goni said that while commissioning of Baglihar project is a milestone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir but care has not be taken on dangerous fallouts which usually occur in peripheries of such mega-projects. Voicing serious concern over the dangers to public life and property which begin soon if the preventive measures are not taken, Goni said even a layman can notice erosions of mountains along the dame site on both sides of Chenab.
He said that with quite visible erosions the roads have started sliding down at many places right from Buggar to Pul Doda. He pointed out that absence of a long drawn conservation plan; this erosion may wreak havoc in the area threatening life and property of people. Goni has appealed the Governor's administration to charge a team of senior officers with this task to formulate comprehensive conservation plan for Ramban-Doda-Bhaderwah region for saving people from a tragedy-in-making.
Voicing concern on another tragic situation, Goni said that Pul Doda has almost gone fully under waters but there is rehabilitation plan in sight. "Had this situation emerged in any other part of country it could have caught eye of activists like Medha Patker and Arundhati Roy but people of Pul Doda have been left on God's mercy", Goni lamented.
He also said that construction on an important bridge to become an alternate link on Chenab after submersion of Pul Doda bridge was started during the Congress regime by allotting contract to a local contractor without following any laid down procedure. "The work was apace till July this year but after fall of government the contractor has abandoned the project", said Goni while inviting attention of the Governor's administration towards plight of people along Chenab.
