Sonia says, it’s festive gift to J&K

JAMMU, Oct 10: Congress president Sonia Gandhi who made a surprise appearance at the Baglihar power project inauguration ceremony described its launch as festival season gift to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sonia Gandhi said that the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre and the State Government have initiated many steps for the infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir. The government headed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has focused on the development of vital sectors like housing, education, health, power, tourism, floriculture etc. to provide greater facilities to the people in rural and urban areas of the State.
Terming the inauguration of this vital project as an important gift for the people of the state during the season of festivals, Mrs. Gandhi urged upon the people to maintain communal harmony and brotherhood to usher in an era of prosperity. She complimented one and all associated with the completion of the project.
The Governor Mr. N. N. Vohra described the inauguration of Baglihar hydro electric power project as a historic moment. He said “it is a good day as the first hydel power project executed in the state sector and fully owned by the state government has been commissioned”. He said that Rs. 1900 crore are spent annually to purchase power to meet present power requirement in the state.
Referring to the MOU signed between Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation, NHPC and Power Trading Corporation (PTC) for execution of hydro electric power projects in the state today, the Governor said that these projects with capacity of 2100 MW would be completed in a fixed time frame. He said under the MOU, 12 per cent power would be available free to the state and another one per cent for the local area.
While referring to the Rangarajan Committee recommendations, he said that DPRs for various hydel projects are almost ready. He hoped that the Central Government would provide necessary funds for execution of these projects.
The Governor said that there is also a proposal to set up a 1000 MW Thermal Power Project in Jammu province and hoped that the Prime Minister would support the State in this regard also. He said the completion of Baglihar hydro electric project has become possible with the liberal funding by the centre.
The Advisor to Governor Mr. C. Phunsog in his vote of thanks said that with the commissioning of Baghlihar hydro electric power project, there would be greater power availability in the state. He said with the coming up of this project, a new beginning would dawn for speedier development in the state, Ramban district in particular.
Union Power Secretary, Mr. Anil Razdan in his welcome address gave a resume and other details of the project. He said that the 450 MW Baglihar hydro electric power project has been completed at a cost of Rs. 5200 crore.
