Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Naa ‘syndrome’ hits crucial DRDO Hospital
6/2/2021 12:27:28 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 1: The much-hyped 500-bed Covid Hospital being constructed by the Defence Research and Development Organization or DRDO has missed the crucial deadline of May 25 due to alleged “flip flop” in finalizing the land for the hospital in Kashmir.
Initially the hospital was scheduled to come up at Rishi Pora in Budgam, the central Kashmir district craving for such facility for several years but was shifted to south Kashmir, which already has many hospitals. As per the locals, hundreds of tress were cut and big chunk of paddy fields were land filled for the construction of the specialized hospital.
But after such ground work, the officials “changed their mind at the eleventh hour.”
As per the administration, the project work had to be stopped following adverse soil report of the proposed location.
“Why was soil testing not done before the massacre of the trees and landfilling of waterbody?” the locals questioned.
Sources in the administration revealed that the proposed hospital was supposed to be converted into a full-fledged hospital once the Covid would be over.
But the site was shifted to Khanmoh area in south Kashmir.
Political observes said “political intervention by some powerful Kashmir based politicians cannot be ruled out to have sabotaged” the construction of much-needed hospital in Budgam district.
“South Kashmir already has a full fledged Government Medical College apart from an upcoming AIIMS like super specialty, where as Budgam craves for such facility, so why was it shifted to Khanmoh, remains the bigger question. Administration has played politics and such faces must be exposed,” said a political observer.
The Anjuman Sharie Shian has already termed the decision of changing the site from Budgam to Khonmoh as “historic injustice”.
In a statement, the organization said that people of Budgam had been waiting for decades for such a facility, but the same has been denied to them for “political reasons”.
While till now the administration has been averting questions over the shifting of the hospital, the officials said the new upcoming facility was recently visited by the Lieutenant Governor.
On May 30, while reviewing the progress being made so far, the Lt Governor directed the DRDO and district officials to expedite the pace of work, initially for “trial-run of all the facilities.”
But why was Budgam deprived of the DRDO hospital remains the bigger question.
