Influential doctors enjoy long breaks at Bemina hospital

Srinagar, June 1: Even as the Covid cases continue to haunt Kashmir, some allegedly influential doctors are not treating patients for most part of the month.
Official sources said a group of four -five doctors at SKIMS Medical College Hospital in Bemina here have developed “sufarshi” duty rosters for doctors where in “some of the senior most and influential doctors are put on the covid duty only after a fortnight.”
Sources said the “coterie of senior doctors” have developed the roster in such a way that they have “minimal contact with the covid cases.”
Official documents as accessed by the Early Times reveal that the senior most pulmonologist at the hospital is on Covid duty for only two days in a month while similar is the case for other senior doctors, who can treat the infected patients.
Documents reveal that such allegedly influential doctors have put them “on call duty for two three days in a month”, which means the doctor will stay at home and will be called only incase of emergency.”
“But emergencies are treated by doctors on duty and there has rarely been a incident when doctor on call was called to the hospital,” said a delegation of the doctors at the hospital. They said the matter was brought to the notice of the senior doctors who “warned” their subordinates of dire consequences. “We’ve been threatened of dire consequences should we dare to open our mouth. This is injustice,” the medicos said.
Sources said the “senior doctors who have more of experience and could treat the covid patients even better have been trying to give a slip to their basic duty.”
“Experts like HOD chest medicine and that of medicine whose services are more needed for patient care than in administration are trying to be busy with odd jobs like paperwork only to be away from their basic duty, which is to treat the Covid cases. If the senior doctors behave so, the plight of patient care can only be imagined,” alleged the delegation of doctors.
They appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally look into the matter.
“If senior doctors at other hospitals can work regularly and with devotion why this VIP culture here?” the medicos asked.
When contacted a senior official at SKIMS Bemina confirmed about the duty roster but said that it was developed “in the interest of administration.”
“They(allegedly influential doctors) are busy with several tasks so not being available (for treatment of Covid) is not that big a job,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile the doctors appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally look into the matter.
