Anything for publicity! Amid pandemic BJP leaders organize gathering at Udhampur school
Preach social distancing without following it, make children sit together

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 1: Despite government schools being officially closed in J&K to contain the spread of the second wave of Covid-19, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders used their influence to get a primary school opened in Udhampur district for their Covid related activity.
Though the leaders emphasized on maintaining social distancing as part of proper Covid behaviour but in their own programme all norms were thrown to the winds.
According to the press releases issued to media houses as well as uploaded on social media platforms, a senior BJP leader organized a programme at Government Primary School Thayal (Dhanas) in Chenani tehsil on May 30th. It was mentioned in the release that the Additional Secretary Protocol JK UT distributed stationery material along with masks, sanitizers among students at Government Primary School.
On the occasion Mandal President, Social activist, DDC contestant, Naib Sarpanch and students were present in large numbers, it was written but strangely as per the photographs circulated among media houses, the small children in school uniforms, could be seen sitting on desks that too in total violation of social distancing norms.
As claimed, the BJP leader shared his experiences about the importance of adopting appropriate Covid-19 behaviour to break the chain of virus and also emphasized on adopting social distancing.
“But in the photographs also, proper Covid-19 behaviour was not followed by the BJP leaders and they had reportedly shut their eyes to the violation of social distancing in their own programme making students vulnerable to infection. Moreover locals could also be seen sitting on the floor in violation of social distancing”, an insider said, adding that from the claims and ground activity of the BJP leaders, it could be easily inferred that the activity was merely for publicity and these leaders are least bothered about the children or the rural population.
These programmes are merely publicity stunts by BJP leaders to rebuild their image among public as most of them have faced public ire in Jammu as well as other districts for alleged indifference towards common masses during peak of pandemic.
“Who had given the permission to open a primary school for BJP leaders while children were called and made to listen to their speeches when UT administration has not allowed the same?”, a teacher said, adding that “These BJP leaders have virtually played with the lives of students by exposing them to gatherings.”
An enquiry should be initiated against these BJP leaders, who have give sermons on Covid-19 appropriate behaviour but do not follow the same and put children at risk for the sake of publicity.
Chief Education Officer (CEO) Udhampur was not contacted as the post has been vacant since the retirement of CEO, while the post of Zonal Education Officer Chenani is also vacant.
