| Govt selecting sites for new IIMs, IITs | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, Oct 12: The government has initiated the process of establishment of 6 IIMs, 8 IITs and 12 Central universities across the country by starting site selection for these institutes. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has constituted various committees for assessing the sites offered by the state governments for the new institutes. For IITs and IIMs, different committees have been formed under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary Ashok Thakur. The committees would visit the places and assess the "suitability" of the locations for the purpose. The government has decided to set up six new IIMs in the states of Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. "The site for IIM should spread over about 200 acres of land while over 500 acres of land is required for each IIT and Central university. Besides, connectivity through air, rail and road is a mandatory requirement for each institute," a senior HRD ministry official said. A committee for examining the site for Haryana IIM was supposed to go to Rhotak last week, but it was cancelled in the last moment. While the government has allocated Rs 2,725 crore in the 11th Plan for 12 new Central universities, the allocations for new IITs and IIMs are Rs 2000 crore and Rs 600 crore respectively. Several committees, headed by Thakur, have been constituted to examine the sites offered for IITs. The committee will visit the sites offered by Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for inspection. |
