BJP’s swabhimaan: a damp squib
10/13/2008 5:18:01 PM

Munish Gupta

Jammu, Oct 12: Desperate to acquire a political ground by consolidating the gains of two-month long agitation in Jammu, the enthusiastic swabhimaan rallies of Bhartiya Janta Party are turning damp squib.
Immediately after the agitation was called off on August 31 following an agreement between government and the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, the BJP embarked on its “swabhimaan” rallies to consolidate the vote bank on discrimination plank. However, people are not responding to the calls as BJP would have expected. A cross section of people who were active during the agitation believes that they agitated for the cause of Amarnath shrine land under the stewardship of Sangharsh Samiti and not BJP.
Party’s first “swabhimaan rally” to kick off the poll campaign in Jammu City today turned as damp squib as not more than 800 odd people turned up. Ironically, when senior leaders got their turn to address, a majority of the participants had left by the time.
The BJP spokesman, however, claimed that “people from all parts of Jammu, braving heat and humidity, came to join the rally”. The prominent leaders who addressed the rally included Ashok Khajuria, Chaman Lal Gupta and Dr. Nirmal Singh.
In his address, Khajuria cautioned the people of Jammu region against the machinations and disinformation campaign being carried out against Sangarsh Samiti and BJP. The Congress party in its disinformation campaign accuses BJP of being not sincere while fact of the matter is that almost every Congress minister has been under investigation for corruption and misconduct by Vigilance Organization and Accountability Commission.
Coming sharply on Saif-ud-Din Soz for his statement that till two years back Jammu was secular but has now ceased to be so at the meeting of political leaders with Prime Minister in Srinagar, Ashok Khajuria said that Jammu was secular and remains so till date.
Chaman Lal Gupta in his address assured the public that BJP would work for setting up of provincial council to ensure due and deserved share for Jammu region in respect of financial resources distribution, government jobs and admission in professional institutions etc. He said that BJP would strive and see to it that Jammu gets its due share in political power as well. He said that people of Jammu have to unite to enable themselves to live with dignity and respect in the state and be its equal citizens instead of playing second fiddle to the valley based ruling elite.
Nirmal Singh said that only long term remedy for woes of Jammu is for fresh delimitation of assembly constituencies based upon the area, number of votes, overall populations etc. The present ratio of assembly seats was unreasonably and unfairly tilted in favour of Kashmir valley. He said infact the whole government activity, its welfare measures, its employment, deployment of its resources and development activity was grossly tilted in favour of valley. This was inspite of the fact that Jammu generated 80 per cent of the total resources generated by the state. It had more population and votes than valley, yet valley had 46 assembly constituencies and 3 parliamentary seats compared to Jammu 37 assembly and 2 parliamentary seats. He said that this had been due to unlettered and illiterate Jai Chands of Jammu who for few petty favours had been accessory to this gross injustice done to Jammu.
