President gets threat mail
10/13/2008 5:23:52 PM

Agencies

Pune, Oct 12: Confirming that a threat mail against President Pratibha Patil, on a visit to Pune, has been received by Rashtrapati Bhavan, officials said central intelligence agencies were probing the case.
So far no group has claimed responsibility for the e-mail addressed to the President.
Officials said here that central intelligence agencies and Delhi Police have been provided with the details and they were working on the leads.
While the e-mail also mentions Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the threat has been issued only against the President.
The mail reportedly mentions words such as "doomed" and "damned country", sources added.
The mail sent by unidentified persons claims that the attackers may come in "any disguise", the official said. Patil arrived here on Friday on a four-day visit and is scheduled to inaugurate the Commonwealth Youth Games this evening.
Her security has been tightened following the threat, the official said.
Terrorist attack on national ethos
Describing terrorist incidents as attacks on national ethos, President Pratibha Patil on Sunday said the country cannot allow misguided elements to pursue their divisive agenda.
"The recent terrorist incidents and other incidents of violence against innocent people are attacks on our national ethos. We are a nation that prides itself for its adherence to the principles of tolerance and peace... Terrorists only have an agenda of disruption and destruction. We cannot allow these misguided elements to pursue their divisive agenda," Patil said.
The President said, violence by a few should not divert people from the path of growth or dilute the basic tolerant character of the country.
She exhorted the people to "change the mindsets of those harbouring the creed of violence and turn them towards the path of peace, amity and communal harmony".
There is a need for everyone to come together and jointly fight terrorism, she said.
Patil also stressed the need of spreading education for all.
"It is good that the 11th Five Year Plan, while enunciating its 'inclusive growth' approach, has given larger focus and financial allocation to higher education," she said, adding that the Plan has appropriately identified the triple objectives of education namely, expansion, inclusion and excellence.
Universities are institutions for public good and public welfare and should fight drug addiction, tobacco consumption and alcoholism, which have a debilitating effect on society, said Patil speaking at the Tenth Convocation function of Bharati Vidyapeeth University.
Patil was also conferred the degree of D.Litt (Honoris Causa Doctor of Letters) by the university Vice Chancellor Patangrao Kadam.
The function was also attended by Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
