Tarun Uppal hails Centre for initiating Delimitation process, hopes it ends discrimination against Jammu
6/10/2021 11:54:05 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 10: Tarun Uppal, chairperson Nirbhay Bharat Foundation has hailed the Centre for initiating Delimitation process in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
In a statement issued to media here today, Tarun said that the Delimitation Commission headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjan Prakash Desai deserves full appreciation for involving the leaders of mainstream political parties in the Delimitation process.
Expressing concern over redrawing the 90 Assembly segments of the newly created Union Territory (UT) of J&K, Tarun said that the area of present constituencies in Jammu province is in no way justified because in comparison to Valley one constituency in Jammu is equal to three in the Kashmir region.
Recalling that Jammu has been consistently remained the victim of successive Kashmir centric governments, he said that the Commission should adopt a fair and just approach so that there is left no scope for discrimination against Jammu province and its people in future.
Uppal said that as per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act the number of seats in the Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir would be increased from 107 to 114 including 24 seats which are reserved for Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) while the election will be held for 90 seats. He asserted that it is for the Commission to ensure that the delimitation of constituencies is carried out in strict accordance with the provisions of the aforesaid Act.
Chairman NBF said that there has already been delay in initiating the much needed efforts towards delimitation of constituencies which has been a long pending demand of the people of Jammu. He added that now it is imperative for the Commission to pace up its proceedings as this would pave the way for the restoration of statehood to J&K as per the commitment of the Centre.
Uppal urged the Delimitation Commission to complete the whole exercise in a time bound manner so that the discrimination being faced by the people of Jammu region for the last seventy years would be addressed.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Delimitation Commission has asked all the 20 Deputy Commissioners of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory to share data pertaining to electorates and other compositions in their districts. The Delimitation Commission was constituted on March 6, 2020 for a period of one year to delimit the constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. However, it has not visited J&K since its establishment. Meanwhile, on March 4, the Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification extending the tenure of the Commission by one year as its term was coming to end on March 5, 2021.
