J&K exporting live seed cocoons to WB
10/14/2008 11:19:56 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Oct 14: Under the double cropping pattern, introduced by the State Sericulture Department, about 20,000 kgs of cocoons were harvested this year against 18,000 kgs in 2006-2007.A Government report has said that the double cropping pattern has been introduced on pilot basis.
It said that under the Prime Minister’s special financial package construction of four cocoon warehouses at Nandali, Mirgund and Berigam(in Kashmir) and Sunderbani(in Jammu) were under progress while one each at Udhampur, Jammu and Srinagar have been made operational. The report said as a result of improved technology and distribution of quality seed to the rearers, the productivity of cocoons per ounce has increased from 25 kgs to 34 kgs.
The report said that the silk industry in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, suffered a major setback due to low priced Chinese silk yarn and its dumping in the Indian silk markets. It resulted in a situation when the rearers in Jammu and Kashmir had thought of shifting to other farming practices. However, the incentive of Rs.10 per kg of cocoon and antidumping duties imposed on the Chinese silk fabrics has eased the situation. The rearers in Jammu and Kashmir have been able to make sales of cocoon worth Rs eight crores against Rs.7.26 crores during two years ago .This was possible when the cocoons prices went up and ranged between Rs.250 and Rs.350 per kg.
The report said that Jammu and Kashmir started exporting seed cocoons to other states, including West Bengal and Karnatka. For the first time it exported live seed cocoons to licensed seed producers of West Bengal who appreciated the quality of the seeds.
