| JK government to construct over 1100 schools | | |
Srinagar, Sep 12 Concerned over the poor results in the government-run schools, the Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to constitute a separate monitoring cell to bring the education standard in the state on a par with the national level.
Minister for Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed said the government has also decided to construct over 1100 schools in the state.
Calling for strengthening the monitoring system in the education department for which he desired to frame a separate full-fledge monitoring cell, Mr Sayeed said it should be a four tier system, comprising Zonal Education Officer, Chief Education Officer, Director and Secretary Education.
Speaking at a high-level meeting convened to review the functioning of the department, the Minister said after launching of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the imparting of elementary education has increased manifold in the state.
Mr Sayeed said he personally would review the functioning of the department on a monthly basis and urged the officers to institutionalise the monitoring system in letter and spirit.
Regarding the re-construction of educational infrastructural base in earthquake-hit areas of Uri and Karnah, he directed the authorities to start the work as per the resources available till the reconstruction package would be approved by the Centre.
The Minister said steps have been taken to reconstruct all the educational institutions, collapsed and damaged in the earthquake.
Director Education Kashmir, Mohammad Rafi said during 2005-06, 145 primary schools were opened, 340 primary schools upgraded to middle schools and 318 EGS centers established.
Besides, 6.1 lakh students were provided free textbooks and 5.33 lakh students were covered under the Mid Day Meal Programme.
He said 1115 primary school buildings were taken up for construction, of which 684 buildings have been completed. Similarly, the construction of 104 middle schools, 698 additional classrooms have also been completed.
During the current financial year, 1115 primary schools, 286 middle schools buildings and 1810 additional classrooms have been approved and work on this will start soon.
