| Except PDP, parties annoyed over EC decision | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 14: Considering the deferment of Election Commission’s decision on election schedule to Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly as eventual delay by months, the political parties have reacted as their known stand. The Peoples Democratic Party has described it as vindication of its stand that situation is not conducive for holding elections at present. The BJP has described the development as disturbing while the Congress said it was ready for elections and leaves it to the Election Commission to make judgment of the situation. As the election commission of India today announced the dates of elections in five states excluding J&K, the suspense has further deepened. Though the election commission has not announcement postponement of the poll the way it has fixed the poll schedule for other five states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Delhi and Mizoram. Early Times spoke to a cross section of political leaders from different parties had a mix bag of reactions. Prof. Hari Om of BJP said that the central govt which is headed by Congress party has surrendered before the separatists and it was the conspiracy between Cong, NC and PDP not to allow elections on schedule time. As these three parties were not able to face the public in coming elections and they succeed in their nefarious designs by putting pressure on election commission. Senior Congress leader and MLC Ranjinder Singh Chib said that EC decision of maintaining suspense for one state and announcing schedule for five others is dismaying. “It is undemocratic”, Chib said. Harsh Dev Singh, former minister and leader of Panthers Party, said that this is a surrender before separatists as Cong has lost ground. He further said, Though it is the prerogative of the election commission to hold or not to hold elections as depends on the ground situation, but in my opinion, the congress party in collaboration with other parties try to influence election commission which yields postponement of elections. Sheikh Abdul Rehman, senior leader of Samajwadi party that without delimitation, no elction should take place. During the last several years, Democracy was not been given chance to flourish as parties used to rig election by undemocratic means. It is a constitutional obligation to delimit the constituency as new eight districts have come up. Governor Vohra through ordinance can delimit the constituencies. Ajay Sadhotra, Senior National Conference leader, said that it is absolutely the prerogative of election commission to hold election. Political parties only can give suggestions on holding of elections. Bashir Assad, PDP Youth Leader and Spokesperson while talking to Early Times Correspondent on phone said his party welcomes the postponement of elections by two months so that the maximum participation of people in Kashmir valley will be make possible and the situation will get improved.. Overall, the experts were of the view that slight deferment of the election could do better for ensuring bigger participation of voters in the polling. However, various sections of people in Jammu region feared that the Assembly election may be postponed till next year and may be it will be clubbed with Lok Sabha elections due in May-June 2009. |
