MUNISH GUPTA
JAMMU, Oct 14: With festivity gripping the air, the City of Temples is wearing a bridal look as women are out on shopping spree ahead of their keenly awaited special day of Karva Chauth.
The word karva means a clay pot and chauth stands for fourth. Celebrated on the fourth day after the Full Moon in the month of Kartik, this festival is celebrated by most married women in North India. Married women buy new karvas, and paint them with beautiful motifs before filling them with shringhar material such as bangles, make-up items, etc.
Women have been buying bangles and other items related to the festival in advance to avoid the last-minute rush. On visiting various parts of the city our correspondent observed that Women were seen buying bindis, sarees, matthis, feniyan and sweets at places in the Patel Bazar the famous for specially this festival, Purani Mandi, Pacca Danga markets here today. The busiest of all were mehndi and tattoo artists, booking hundreds of orders in the city everyday.
It is the duty of every married woman to dress up and observe a complete fast on the day of Karva Chauth,” said Anita Sharma, who was busy purchasing glass bangles in the market.
She said, “It has been said if a woman observes fast on Karva Chauth, her husband is blessed with a long life. So she has to break the fast only after seeing the moon and the face of her husband.”
“This year it will be my first Karva Chauth. As items for the festival are not available in my village, so I have come to Jammu to purchase these,” said Bimla, a resident of R.S Pura sector in the Jammu region.
“Bangles and mehndi have always been a craze among women. They are so fond of bangles that they get dresses to match those. The shopkeepers in Jammu are doing a booming business, as almost all cosmetic shops in the city are busy selling synthetic and glass bangles and cosmetics. “Thank God we are experiencing a very good sale ahead of the festival and the profit is also good,” said Raman Lal, a shopkeeper in the Purani Mandi area of Jammu city
Be it beauticians of the city or roadside mehndi artists, women had been approaching them to get mehndi on their hands on the eve of Karva Chauth. Ram, a mehndi artist from Rajasthan, who has specially come to the city, said, “My other relatives stay here and work in the industries. But they call me from Rajasthan to give them support and latest tips on this art. I get henna from Rajasthan which is not only pure but the colour also is longlasting”.
He, along with his 20 members, have put up stalls at all most all parts of the sity. One of the artists said, “It is not necessary that we apply mehndi to women who come to us. We go to women’s houses if there is a big order and we are informed about it well in time. But the rates will be slightly expensive then”.
For small girls, the rates vary from Rs 25 to Rs 50 per hand. But these mehndiwalas have increased their rates today when there is a great rush. “Zardozi, geometrical, traditional and arabian mehndi are in for the season. The women have been applying shaded mehandi also with a very dark outline and light shades inside the pattern”, said another mehndi artist from Uttar Pradesh.
