| Mufti for accelerating peace process | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct15: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said the space provided by deferring of a decision on J&K polls should be used to speed up the resolution and reconciliation process involving not only various shades of political opinion, but all sections of the society in the State Addressing PDP workers from Kokernag at his residence here today, Sayeed said the latest developments in the State offer the Government of India an opportunity to reinforce its resolve of working through peaceful means and through public participation towards the resolution of the problem. "I hope the historic opening of Srinagar-Muzafarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote roads for trade would be supplemented by some more bold initiatives, to facilitate the Kashmir resolution process, both on the bilateral and internal fronts," he said and added that the recent developments have only reiterated the urgency of accelerating the peace process. The PDP Patron said the Government must take measures at the political, economic, social and administrative fronts to regain the faith and trust of the people, shattered after some recent unfortunate and tragic incidents. "While the democratic and political processes are fundamental to the larger public welfare, these have to be necessarily inclusive and participatory," he said and added that otherwise such processes lose their essence, relevance and credibility. Sayeed said the State had started witnessing continuous changes of great importance and substance after the 2002 elections transforming its ground scenario positively. This, he said had resulted in consistent increase of public participation in the democratic processes. "However, the waning interest in the peace process at the local Government level, after 2005 resulted in people's disillusionment and alienation and the result is there for everybody to see," he said and cautioned that the prevailing political vacuum in the Government should not be allowed to widen the gulf. Sayeed said given its limitations although the present administration in the State can't reach out to the masses at large, but it could have a role in facilitating certain broader confidence building measures including reassessing the role of the armed forces in the internal security duties, revocation of the AFSPA and rehabilitation of the victims of violence. "Such measures have become imperative in transforming the public mindset and the situation in the State," he said. PDP leaders Abdul Rehman Veeri, Peer Mohammad Hussain and Sehar Iqbal were also present. |
