| Need to revise elementary education policy: Experts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Oct 15: Propagation of elementary education will not serve its purpose unless government wakes up to the necessity of incorporating effective teaching and learning methods in schools to ensure quality education. Educationists here allege that illogical criterion employed in the recruitment process of teachers is the primary reason for the poor performance of students in government schools. "Access to education loses its meaning if it is made inaccessible due to irrational selectivity. The recruitment agencies in Kashmir while formulating the criteria barely give any consideration to B. Ed degree, job skills and other intellectual abilities of the aspiring teachers, "emphasizes Prof A.G Madhosh "Even class 12 pass outs are eligible for teaching post as government has made a lot of appointments of Rehbar-e-Taleem. In this scenario increasing dropout rates and poor results in government schools is not surprising,'' added Madhosh. Adding further he asserted that central sponsored scheme, District Institute Education and Training (DIETS) which was supposed to conduct refresher courses for teachers is totally defunct in Kashmir. This has given further setback to the system of primary education in Kashmir.
The main function of DIETS is to provide academic and resource support at district level for the success of various programmes, being undertaken in the field of primary and adult education. He further added that the purpose of education is not only to impart knowledge but more importantly to tap the hidden talents and potential of the students and helping them to develop physically, intellectually and morally. Madhosh alleged that government rates quality of education by the size of faculty and infrastructure which results in skewed and segmented pattern of education. "Government continues to launch schemes to promote education for all and under various schemes the state continues to open more schools to ensure accessibility of education to the poor. Yet, government has failed miserably to monitor the quality of education imparted to students,'' he said "There were many instances of negligence like keeping schools non functional for month's; low levels of teaching activities even in those schools that had relatively 'good infrastructure and teaching aids,'' added Prof Madhosh For better promotion of primary education government needs to bring radical change in its teaching methodologies otherwise in near future it will be left with no role in public education system. |
