| Now Urdu comes in way of early polls | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 16: Besides a widely reported split in the opinion of Election Commission, Urdu has emerged yet another obstacle in the way of holding timely assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir needs a large strength of security forces for guarding the election exercise. These troops can be drawn from any state, wherever available, but they must be Urdu knowing. This is reported to be a major obstacle in way of announcing assembly election schedule for Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission, which was divided over holding the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, appears to have veered around to the view that the democratic exercise cannot be delayed. The Commission, which announced the poll schedule for five states on Tuesday but undecided on J and K, has called a meeting of Chief Secretaries of six states tomorrow to find out if they can spare 4,000 to 5,000 Urdu speaking employees for poll duties in the troubled state. In case, they are available, "we will very quickly take a decision," agencies quoted EC sources as saying. There were differences of opinion among the three-member Commission with two Commissioners favouring immediate polls and the CEC N Gopalaswami having some reservation. The EC is working on a contingency plan before taking a decision on the timing of elections in the border state. The Commission will consult Chief Secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh to know to what extent these states can spare Urdu-speaking government employees for the polls. EC sources said the move is aimed at having a backup contingency plan in the event of government staff in the sensitive state not being able to offer their services due to some reasons. |
