| ‘EC should end uncertainly on J&K polls’, Gupta | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 16: Impressing upon the Election Commission of India to end the uncertainty about the timings of elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the former Union Minister and a senior BJP leader, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has said that the conduct of poll is a constitutional obligation and any dilly dallying in this regard is a serious aspersion on the democratic process to go on in accordance with the law of the land and added that it is not for any party or parties to decide the timing of the elections. Commenting upon the inordinate delay in the announcement of the time schedule about the polls in Jammu and Kashmir, Prof. Gupta regretted that the Congress is employing various tactics to get elections in Jammu and Kashmir delayed. Alleging that dynastic Congress has little faith in democracy, he said ‘this party wanted to rule in Jammu and Kashmir by proxy because there is Governor’s rule which is obviously the rule of the Congress led UPA’. Commenting upon the history of elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Prof. Gupta recalled that the Congress and its adopted child the National Conference had always played foul and had been managing “unopposed” victories in over 50 per cent constituencies and it was only in 1972, when there was no up-opposed victory and in many of the areas for the first time people saw the ballot paper. He said that it was only in the NDA rule at the Centre in 2002, that the government was changed through poll process in the state adding that it was acknowledged as the fairest elections ever held in the state. Prof. Gupta accused the Congress of being afraid of the electorates because of misdeeds of its leaders who ruled the roost for so many years. He termed the Congress led, dispensation of Ghulam Nabi Azad as most incompetent, irresponsive and anti-Jammu. In this regard the BJP leader pointed out that there was highest number of agitation during the past three years of this erstwhile regime and because of its in competency this coalition faced disgraceful end in July last. And its leaders are now obviously afraid of the elections because of the anger against them of the people in Jammu and Ladakh regions and growth of religious fundamentalism in the valley but for their own wrongs. The evading of the poll process would further provide opportunity to the separatists to expand their space because of vacuum created by mainstream politics in the absence of a democratic government, he asserted. |
