Democratic Process In Jammu And Kashmir
Omkar Dattatray7/3/2021 11:58:08 PM
Now that the prime minister of the country has taken the initiative of convening an all party meeting of the political parties and the regional parties of Jammu and Kashmir to discuss all issues of the disturbed erstwhile state including the holding of the much needed assembly elections. The regional political parties should take the bull by horns and plunge to proceed and commence the democratic process. It is the responsibility of the regional political leaders and parties to prepare the ground for the holding of the assembly elections. The union government and the prime minister is very keen to restore the democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible. The prime minister has made it clear that the assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir after the delimitation exercise is completed . It is a good augury that all the political parties including the regional parties and Gupkaries have reached a consensus on the matter of holding of the assembly elections. The regional parties and the Gupkar alliance should now come forward and take the advantage of the prime ministers open and broad mind and his desire to see the democratic process to be a reality in near future. The Gupkaries and other regional political parties should shun their rigid stands and show flexibility and help in the ushering of the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir which is long overdue .The governors rule or the centres rule is a temporary arrangement and is not an alternative to a democratic rule and so all the stakeholders should work over time to restore the democratically elected government in the disturbed Jammu and Kashmir. Thus the political activities should automatically gain momentum and all the regional players should take the initiative of involving themselves in the political process so that the elections to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly will be held very soon .On its part the centre government is very keen in ushering of the democratic process in the Jammu and Kashmir and now it is the turn of the regional political parties to take the initiative of jumping in the political process of holding of the elections. The regional political parties should shun their rigid stands and play their part in the much needed exercise of holding of the elections .In this regard the regional political parties and satraps should co -operate with the election commission which is busy in the delimitation of the constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. Thus the assembly elections should succeed the delimitation of the constituencies .Omar Abdullah the national conference leader and the former chief minister is demanding the restoration of the statehood before the holding of the elections and Congress leader and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir is also advocating the restoration of the full statehood before the holding of the elections .Such demands are impractical and should not be raised as a pre condition for the holding of the elections nor should the regional parties stress on the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir before the holding of the elections. The national conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah has rightly said that to talk of the restoration of the abrogated article 370 of the constitution is non sense and it should not be raised at this juncture .Thus it is in the interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the elections should be held and all the political parties should participate in these elections. The PDP chief and the former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti should also shun her impractical stand of restoration of the article 370 of the constitution before the holding of the elections...Such demands are impractical as the matter is sub judice before the apex court of the country and thus to talk of the restoration of the article 370 is humbug and such demands should not be raised for the cause of democracy and the democratically elected government .Thus no tags should be attached as the pre conditions of holding the much needed elections. The political parties of the Jammu and Kashmir should gauge the mood of the prime minister and the home minister who have made it clear that the full statehood will be given to the disturbed erstwhile state at the appropriate time. Thus the elections to the assembly should not be tagged with the various conditions .It is the responsibility and the duty of the regional political parties to initiate the stalled political process as soon as possible and the union government is ready to provide all help in this regard. So the political parties including the regional players should start the political process in Jammu and Kashmir so that the people are provided a democratic government at the earliest to heal the wounds of people of Jammu and Kashmir and give a succour to the people. In any case the political vacuum should be removed and for this to happen the holding of the much needed and overdue assembly elections is the only way out otherwise we will fail in our duty of upholding the democracy in this part of the country. In any case as the fallow up of the all party meet convened by the prime minister, the elections of the assembly are needed to salvage the people of the disturbed Jammu and Kashmir from political uncertainty.
