EARLY TIMES REPORT KARGIL, Oct 17: Rupees 37.50 lakhs is being spent on development of Sheep Husbandry in Kargil district during the current financial year under district plan. This was stated in a meeting held to review the functioning of Sheep Husbandry department. The Executive Councillor, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, LAHDC, Kargil Haji Ghulam Amir was in the chair. It was apprised in the meeting that Kargil has a cattle population of 2.73 lakhs, of this 1, 79, 646 sheep and 93, 840 goats. The department of Sheep Husbandry covers this population by providing health and breeding coverage through its 53 Sheep extension centres. During the last fiscal, the department treated 38100 Sheep and goats against contagious and non-contagious diseases, 98, 800 vaccinated against infectious and communicable diseases. Besides the department of Sheep Husbandry, Kargil gave dosing to 1, 76, 000 and dipping/dusting to 1, 12, 000 sheep/goats. While speaking in the meeting, Amir emphasized the need to give broader attention on pasture development in Kargil district, adding that Kargil being a hilly district has a big potential for cattle breeding especially sheep like Karakul, Marino and goats, like Angora, Pashmina and alpines. He urged upon the officers of the Sheep Husbandry department to give proper attention for the p promotion of high breed cattles in the district. |
