The city wore a festive look on the eve of Karva Chauth today as wives, even young girls attired in bright cheerful dresses, thronged the city’s markets to shop for the festival. With bangles considered synonymous to the festival, an unprecedented rush was witnessed around bangle-sellers as women and girls waited their turn to get these slipped on to their arms. The markets were abuzz with activity till late night with mehandiwalas applying henna on the hands of women and girls. The women were seen doing last-minute shopping for the festival. Keeping in view the huge rush of the people in the city bazaars the security has been beefed up. "The nakas in the cities and its peripheral areas have been strengthened with additional deployment of cops and para-military force jawans".The cops in civvies were deployed in these busy markets to keep an eye on the anti-social elements, criminals, eve-teasers and pick-pockets. In the evening, women perform puja at home or gather at a place to pray and exchange the karvas. Lord Ganesh is also worshipped for the fulfilment of their wishes. The katha of Karva Chauth is also narrated. When the moon rises, they worship it and see the face of their husbands’ through a sieve. After the prayers have been offered, they accept a drink of water and food given by their husbands. Almost all Indian women keep the ‘Karva Chauth’ fast with great faith and devotion. They wait for the fast with much interest. This is the day when even the most modern woman, in her heart feels and re-assures herself about the love, respect and devotion towards her husband and prays for his long life. The Indian society is considered to be male dominated, where women are supposed to obey the rules and regulations. But there are men who are above all egoistic barriers. Very few persons know that men too keep ‘Karva Chauth’ fast like women to reciprocate the sentiment towards their better half. |
