SAC calls for regional cohesion

EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Oct 19: The Jammu and Kashmir advisory Council headed by Governor N N Vohra has called for enhancement of people-to-people contact between diffe
rent regions of the state in the aftermath of Amarnath land row.
The Council, comprising politicians, academicians and social workers made the appeal after a five-hour meeting chaired by Vohra here last evening, official sources said.
With the state set to initiate cross-border trade with Pak-Occupied-Kashmir through Uri-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote routes on October 21, the members felt the need for immediately restoring economic linkages between trade and industry within the state, the sources said.
This could be achieved through intra-regional contacts and talks to remove any "remaining misgivings" in the wake of Amarnath issue when people of Jammu and Kashmir regions took divergent stand, they said.
The members suggested holding of chamber to chamber meetings and interaction seminars at the level of dealers. They also felt the youths of the state could play a pivotal role in giving a new direction to intra-regional relations.
"This could perhaps be achieved by organising youth exchange programmes, holding inter-school, inter-college and inter-university seminars, debates and interactive sessions and encouraging sports and cultural events," the members suggested.
All necessary action should be taken by educational institutions to ensure that the prescribed academic curriculum is completed and examinations held in time so that interests of students were not adversely affected due to frequent law and order disturbances, the council said.
It expressed concern over a recent survey report on governance and corruption which placed Jammu and Kashmir in the category of 'Alarming States', the sources said.
The Council called for a massive drive against corruption. "This objective cannot be achieved through governmental efforts alone. We need to generate efforts to build a greater and wider stakeholdership among diverse sections of society to face such a formidable challenge," the council members noted.
The meeting was attended by Abdul Rahim Rather (NC) , Abdul Aziz Zargar (PDP), Ghulam Hassan Mir (Democratic party), A R Tukroo (CPI), Ashok Khajuria (BJP), Bhim Singh (Panthers party), M Y Tarigami (CPI-M) and Hakim Mohammad Yasin (Peoples democratic froum) among others.
