| Jammu Bar to have new constitution: Sethi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 19: Elected second time with a thumping majority in a keenly contested election, the new president of the Bar Association of Jammu has listed the redrawing of association’s constitution and pushing for consideration of competent woman lawyers for the post of Judges as topmost priorities. Sunil Sethi, who was elected second time to the post of the president of Bar Association of Jammu results of which were announced last midnight, told EARLY TIMES that in his present term he will pick up the threads from where he had left in 2004 and make the Bar Association of Jammu an institution to reckon with. Son of country’s leading legal luminaries of times late Justice RP Sethi, Sunil was earlier president of the Bar till October 2004. His illustrious father Justice Sethi too had remained Jammu Bar’s president in 1985-85. Sethi, who traveled to Pakistan administered Kashmir and addressed Mirpur Bar Association in 2004, said that he will make all concerted efforts to enhance level of interactions between Jammu Bar and various Bar associations of country and beyond. It was on his invitation that the lawyers of Mirpur Bar had visited Jammu in 2005. It may be mentioned here that Bar Association of Jammu is one of the oldest Bars in country with a history of 80 years. “I am happy that now we have a two-year term as against one-year when I was President last time. This gives me ample time and opportunity to complete the tasks outlined during my previous stint”, said Sethi. Listing his priorities, Sethi said his association with take matters with concerned quarters which include: resumption of work on lawyers’ chambers, setting aside a colony for lawyers, rationalization of the policy for appointing government advocates, consideration of competent woman lawyers as Judges besides amendments in the constitution. When asked why he wants amendments in constitution, Sethi said, “we have this constitution since 1928 and a lot has changed in 28 years”. That was the time (1980) when we had 200 lawyers and now there are around 1000; this necessitates amendments in the constitution to suit the present day matters and issues. He pointed out that the membership fees of the Bar Association are too high which needs to be slashed. Sethi also felt concerned about the electoral malpractices whenever Bar goes to polls. “While moving for amendment of constitution will have strict measures that Bar elections are held in a strict discipline with no room for unhealthy maneuvering”, said Sethi. Noting with satisfaction that a woman lawyer has been elected as office bearer (Vice President) of Bar association, Sethi regretted that not a single lawyer from the Bar has ever been chosen to the post of Judge. “This will be one of the major priority areas during our term to pursues this case with the State High Court and Supreme Court of India”, said Sethi. |
