| 58 breaches since 2003 | | BORDER CEASEFIRE | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, Oct 20: Pakistan had violated the five-year-old pact on ceasefire 58 times since the ceasefire agreement came into effect from November 2003, the the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday. Replying to a question in Parliament, Defence Minister A K Antony said since January 2008, Indian positions on the Line of Control (LoC) have been fired upon 34 times, while the total ceasefire violation by Pakistan has occurred on 58 counts. On measures taken up by the government to prevent recurrence of such incidents, Antony said, protests are registered through the established mechanisms of hotline, flag meetings as well as weekly talks between the Director General of Military Operations. "Strong retaliatory action is taken against any attempts of violation of the LoC, while maintaining adequate restraint to prevent escalation," he added. The Minister, however, said that infiltration bids in Jammu and Kashmir from across the international border are on decline. Citing figures of infiltrations, the minister stated that there were only 243 infiltrators during April to September 2008 as against 419 infiltrators during the same period last year. During the current year, 193 terrorists were killed while 157 were arrested in the same period this year. A multi-tier arrangement, including deployment of troops, surveillance devices, Line of Control fence, state and Central security forces has proved effective in discouraging infiltrators, he said. |
