EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 20: With Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency of the winter capital city having highest number of electors, Jammu district comprising eleven constituencies has more voters by over two lakhs than a cumulative electoral list of at least four districts in Kashmir Valley. Gandhi Nagar constituency in Jammu district has 152,100 voters which more than the entire elector strength of Shopian district in South Kashmir or Ganderbal district in Central Kashmir. Ganderbal and Shopian having two constituencies each have 137,495 and 139,475 voters, respectively. Entire Jammu district based on eleven constituencies has 943,389 votes while four districts in Kashmir Valley –Ganderbal, Bandipore, Shopian and Kulgam –have cumulative voter strength of 746,772. If another constituency, Pulwama is added to this, the strength comes out at 1039731. This means five districts in Kashmir Valley have just around 90,000 voters higher than single district of Jammu. Entire Jammu region based on 37 assembly constituencies has 3084417 voters while entire Kashmir Valley based on 46 assembly constituencies has 2931404 voters. According to the Election Department figures, more than 31 lakh women are among the over 64 lakh voters eligible to exercise their franchise in the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir beginning November 17, official sources said. As many as 64,97,593 voters including 31,45,446 women are eligible to cast their votes in elections to the 87-member assembly being held in seven phases, sources said. They said Jammu district comprising 11 constituencies has the largest electorate of 9,43,389, including 4,64,844 women voters while Leh district comprising two assembly segments has the lowest number of 74,396 voters, including 36,773 women. Gandhinagar assembly segment in Jammu has the most number of voters at 1,52,100 including 73,437 women while Nubra constituency in Leh district has the least number of voters at 11,863 including 5,920 women, the sources said. Srinagar district spread over eight assembly constituencies has 5,57,265 voters including 2,68,281 women, sources said. Kupwara district comprising five assembly constituencies has an electorate of 3,41,004 voters including 1,63,144 women. Baramulla district spread over seven assembly segments has an electorate of 5,18,215 including 2,49,868 women. The Bandipora district covers three assembly constituencies with an electorate of 1,86,069 including 89,221 women voters, they said. Newly-created Ganderbal district is spread over two constituencies with a total electorate of 1,37,495 including 66,159 female voters. The five assembly segments of Budgam district comprise 3, 83,914 electors including 1,85,099 women voters, the sources said. Pulwama district has four assembly segments and newly created districts of Shopian and Kulgam have two and four segments, respectively. Pulwama has a total electorate of 2,92,959 including 1,51,635 women while Shopian has 1,39,475 voters including 67,173 women. Kulgam district has a total of 2,83,733 voters with 1,47,449 of them being women. Anantnag district spread over six constituencies has 4,20,534 voters including 2,03,285 w omen. Kargil district has two segments with 78,117 voters including 39,347 women, the sources said. The districts of Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban have two constituencies each with the first one having an electorate of 1,43,718. Doda district has 1,67,020 voters and Ramban district 1,47,883. Udhampur and Reasi districts have three constituencies each with the former having 2,81,452 voters including 1,33,376 women. The latter has 2,12,242 voters including 1,01,589 women. Kathua district comprises five assembly segments and Samba district two constituencies. While the former has 4,02,747 voters, the latter has a total of 1,72,929 voters. The twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch have four and three constituencies respectively. Rajouri has 3,53,457 voters while Poonch has 2,59,580 electors including 1,27,473 women. |
