Glowing tributes paid to founder of J&K

JAMMU, Oct 21: The 216th birth anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh, founder of Jammu and Kashmir State, was jointly celebrated by Maharaja Gulab Singh Memorial Trust and Jammu and Kashmir Dharmarth Trust Council at Raghunath Mandir, here today.
On the occasion, former Minister and senior NC leader Maharaj Kumar Ajatshatru, trustee, Maharaja Gulab Singh Memorial Trust and Thakur Divakar Singh, president, Dharmarth Trust were also present.
The function started with the garlanding of the portrait of Maharaja Gulab Singh by Ajatshatru, Divakar Singh and other dignitaries.
Paying rich tributes to Maharaja Gulab Singh, Ajat Shatru said that late Maharaja first created the new boundaries of the state then consolidated the same with his valour and sharp ability.
He further said that he extended and secured the boundaries of this vast and strategic state which was multi-lingual, having people of different faiths, its varied terrain from plain to high mountains and even wide-range of climatic conditions.
"The Maharaja managed to extend and consolidate the State in extremely difficult conditions and when we celebrate Gulab Singh's birthday we also remember other valiant generals and common soldiers for their magnificent attainments", Singh said.
In the function, Singh presented Maharaja Ranbir Singh scholarship to scholars for their outstanding works. Ajatshatru also distributed sewing machines among destitute women and source less poor persons to mark the occasion.
The authority on the J&K history, Prof. Hari Om and Sanskrit Doyen, Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai described the first Maharaja of the Jammu and Kashmir State, ‘as a great visionary, warrior and patriotic king’.
Earlier, the Pujaries of Shri Raghunath Ji temple recited 'the Shantipath' and offered special Pooja with prayer for peace and prosperity of the people in the State.
