Capacity building among women managers
UGC workshop at MIER

JAMMU, Oct 21: The 5-day UGC sponsored workshop on ‘Capacity Building of Women Managers in Higher Education’ organized by Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies, MIER College of Education began here today. More than thirty participants from University of Jammu, Government Degree Colleges, Government as well as private B. Ed. Colleges of Education and Engineering Colleges are participating in the workshop.
Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Director Colleges Development Council and Director Quality Assurance, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Dr. Arun K. Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions was the Guest of Honour. Among the distinguished personalities present were Dr. Pam Rajput, Member National Consultative Committee UGC and Core Group Resource Person and Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Director CWS, University of Jammu and Regional Coordinator of the workshop.
Dr Kilam congratulating Dr. Arun K.Gupta and Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER for providing dynamic leadership to the Institution said that women academicians are under represented in the higher education system and with the increasing complexity of management of higher education; the proper leadership training to women managers in higher education has become essential. She complimented. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies for organizing such a workshop which would lead to more capacity building of women in higher education system.
Welcoming the dignitaries at the workshop, Dr. Renu Gupta, Director, Centre and Local Coordinator said that the workshop aims at sensitizing women managers regarding women’s perspective identifying the barriers that marginalize women in managerial positions, building academic leadership, helping them balance their personal and professional roles and empowering them by building their capacities. She hoped that the workshop would enable them to emerge as leaders in their own institutions.
Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Director CWS, University of Jammu and Regional Coordinator giving details about the workshop said that during the five days long workshop, sessions on different themes will be taken up by experts from various parts of the country. The themes to be covered during the workshop will be Women Studies Perspectives; Women and Governance; Women and Academic Leadership; Managing Personal and Professional Roles and Women and Research. She emphasized that at the lower and middle level management of organizations there are plenty of women but studies show that very few have become the heads or CEOs of organizations in India. Thus, this training program will motivate women towards building their capacities. She appreciated the leading role of the MIER College and its Centre for Women Studies and hoped that the Centre will emerge as a leading Centre.
Dr. Pam Rajput gave special remarks about the workshop and highlighted that the Centre for Women Studies at MIER has become the first Centre in India to organize the present workshop during the 11th Plan period with UGC assistance. She said the UGC project on capacity building of women managers in higher education was launched nationwide in the year 2000 to deal with the skewed gender gap seen in the top rungs of the organization ladder, commonly referred to as the glass ceiling.
Dr. Arun K.Gupta blamed men for the present status and plight of women and said that women had long suffered since their basic rights were denied to them. He underlined the importance of restoring confidence, competency and cope ability among women as women resources will eventually prove to be invaluable for our nation’s survival and progress. He assured that the MIER and all its units will continue their good work to enable women to break their glass ceilings. While giving felicitations for the workshop he said that the importance of women in decision making need to be realized and some visionary and systematic changes are required in this direction.
