| Aspirants active, parties still numb | | Congress, BJP await central nods, NC yet to discuss strategy, PDP meet creates suspicion | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 21: Soon after the election announcement, aspirants have through started running to the grounds to secure a foothold but the parties are yet to come up with their strategies and agenda. National political parties, like Congress and the BJP are looking towards their high commands and central leaderships for guideline and policy frameworks while the regional parties are yet to decide on what exactly they should take public. Congress leaders are booking their trains to New Delhi for consultation with the high command. It is yet not clear in the party as exactly what role the PCC Chief Saif-ud-Din Soz and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad have to play and upto what extent. The Congress high command is expected to hold a meeting soon to issue whip on activities, roles and responsibilities to its various senior leaders. Names are reportedly being short-listed for constituting a mandate committee but aspirants are in fix as who should they approach first. In BJP camp, the wait is for arrival of senior leader and general secretary Arun Jaitly. Things are comparatively clearer in BJP as at the level of its central leadership there are no lobbies as far as the charges of Jammu and Kashmir affairs are concerned. Arun Jaitly was declared as election incharge of the party some three months back and he is reported to have done quite good exercise in studying ground position and candidate profiles. National Conference is also yet to convene its first meeting on the poll strategy. Most of its aspirants are rushing to the capitals cities of Jammu and Srinagar to ensure their mandates but the party is yet to announce its mandate committee. Sources said that NC is not likely to have a well formed up mandate committee as patron Farooq Abdullah and President Omar Abdullah will clear most of the names by consultations. In nearly 35 constituencies, the National Conference had already named its candidates –some of the old tried and trusted faces. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has yet to open its cards on participation in the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving everybody guessing. The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the party is meeting on October 24 and 25 to take a final decision whether to join or stay away from the poll process, PDP General Secretary Nizam Uddin Bhat said today. He said no decision has been taken so far. About non-participation of PDP leaders in the all party meeting called by Governor N N Vohra yesterday in connection with the election arrangments, Mr Nizam, MLC, said we do not want to send a confusion signal to the people of the state. ''How can we take part in the meetings called in connection with the holding of elections by the administration when we have not yet decided about participating in the process,'' he said. Nizam said selecting candidates for the polls would be decided only when a final decision is taken by the PAC. The PDP leaders during their meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Election Commission of India (ECI) has opposed immediate polls and said situation was not conducive for credible polls. The PDP had suggested several Confidence Building Measurs (CBM) before going for polls to have larger participation of people in the democratic process. The party had in fact welcomed the ECI when poll schedule was announced for only five Indian states, leaving Jammu and Kashmir. However, latest announcement of ECI has surprised the PDP. |
