National experts laud BGSBU work on biodiversity

JAMMU, Oct 22: The National meet of Biodiversity experts from within and outside the state, held at the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, (BGSBU) on Oct. 18, commended the work done by the CBS in recognition of its distinction as Regional Resource Agency by DBT and Lead Botanical Garden by MoEF for the Northern Western Phytogeographic region.
The experts who participated included among others Dr. M. Sanjappa, Director, BSI, Dr. A.R Rehmani, Director, BNHS, Dr. P.S Ahuja, Director, IHBT and CIMAP, Dr. L.M. Palni, Director, GHPIHED, Prof. C.R. Babu, Ex Pro Vice Chancellor, Delhi University, Dr. Ramakrishnan, Director ZSI, Dr. Q.H Baqri, Additional Director (Retd.) ZSI. Dr. J.L. Karihaloo, Former Director, NBPGR, Prof. S.P Vij, Punjab University, Prof. A.K. Wakhloo, Dean Life Sciences, University of Jammu.
The experts evolved the road map for biodiversity studies in the centre for the coming ten years. Some of the issues flagged for follow up during this period are Landscape Mappling, Exploration and inventorisation of flora and fauna, Ecorestoratioin, Genetic and Chemical studies, community studies, Establishment of field conservatory, assessment of avifauna and butterfuly diversity.
Directors of the Botanical and Zoological Surveys of India, Bombay Natural History Society, Institute of Himalayan Bio resource technology, G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and development offered to join the centre in pursuing research on issue of common interest.
Dr. Sanjappa, Director BSI commented that “this meeting to develop a road map for Bio-diversity of Pir Panjal range will go a long way for CBS”. Prof. C.R Babu a leading expert in Bio-diversity studies was of the opinion that “The Centre has a great potential and I do hope that it will achieve its mission successfully”. Dr. Ramakrishan, Director ZSI felt that the Centre is “young but sufficiently grown in stature within a short time”.
The Bio-diversity advisory board was constituted which will be chaired by the Governor.
Other members of the committee will include besides those from within the state M. Sanjappa, Director, BSI, Dr. A.R Rehmani, Director, BNHS, Dr. P.S Ahuja, Director, IHBT and CIMAP, Dr. L.M Palni, Director, GBPIHED, Prof. C.R Babu, Ex-Pro Vice Chancellor, Delhi University, Dr. Ramakrishnan, Director ZSI, Dr. Q.H. Baqri, Additional Director (Retd.) ZSI, Dr. J.L Karihaloo, Former Director, NBPGR, Prof. S.P Vij, Punjab University. The National meet was inaugurated and addressed by the Governor.
