| NC launches its campaign | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: National Conference has emerged first among all the political parties to launch election campaign from Kashmir Valley. The party is yet to draw its poll strategy and unveil the manifesto but a beginning has been made by reaching out to people when eyes are focused on the poll boycott call. Omar Abdullah has termed the separatists' decision for a poll boycott as one against "the interest of the people". "The slogan of boycott (of upcoming assembly elections) is not in the interest of the people of the state. There are many ills in the system, which an elected government can address." Addressing party workers at Budgam district, which goes to polls in the fourth phase on December seven, he appealed to the people to participate in the democratic exercise. Abdulla, also an MP, however said, "Elections are no solution to the Kashmir issue. Elections are meant to address the day-to-day problems of the people and not a solution to the Kashmir issue." "As far as National Conference is concerned, we consider restoration of internal autonomy as the best solution for Kashmir problem. If anything better than autonomy is worked out (by India and Pakistan) we will welcome it." |
