| Mehbooba may contest elections from Anantnag | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: Peoples Democratic Party is though ‘officially’ deepening suspense on its participation on elections but the organization is covertly finalizing the list of its potential candidates. Most of the Peoples Democratic Party leaders are currently camping in Srinagar to draw the poll strategy. The party has one round of meeting of its Political Affairs Committee on Tuesday at the end of which it was announced that party is yet to take a final decision on the poll participation. Top organizational leadership of the party is meeting again on October 25 to take a final decision. Sources, however, maintained that the PDP is all set to hit the poll ground but a decision is being withheld to avail time for gauging public mood in Kashmir Valley where party expects significant number of seats. The party is currently going through hectic rounds of consultations and deliberations on finalizing its election candidates. It was four months back when the Peoples Democratic Party had constituted a mandate committee headed by Muzaffara Hussain Baig to finalise the candidates. Names of seven candidates were cleared before tension in Kashmir Valley broke out in last week of June. In fresh round of consultations, the party is no zeroing in all final faces and complete list may be announced by October 28. Sources said that the Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who continues to be a Member of Parliament, is all set to contest the assembly election this time. It is learnt that Mehbooba is likely to contest election from Anantnag constituency instead of Pahalgam, currently (till dissolution of assembly) represented by her father and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mufti, sources said, is not likely to contest election this time from any constituency and instead he will take the charge of campaigning and strategy. Insiders said that party is considering Rafi Ahmed Mir for Pahalgam constituency. Rafi if presently a Member of the Legislative Council and has remained MLA on Pahalgam seat on National Conference ticket. Anantnag assembly segment was till recently represented by Dr Mehbooba Baig of National Conference. |
