| Power shock: 13 hrs blackout | | Govt says, ‘bear with us, no other option left’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Oct 22: Had there been the political authority instead of Governor’s administration, the power scenario could have disempowered many –but in present circumstances, after announcing a 13 hours long curtailment schedule, the government has said that there is no other option. The Power Development Department has said that it is not left with any other option but to curtail the supply. Ironically, this curtailment schedule has been announced at a time when state has commissioned a major power project owned by it and most of the urban areas have switched over to the electronic meters. Power Development Commissioner R.K.Seli has appealed the people to make judicious use of power and also sought cooperation from the media in apprising the people in this behalf. Referring to power scenario, Seli said that the state from all resources imports 900 Mws against the demand of 1200 Mws. He said the gap of 300 Mws is met by over drawing of power from outside the state. He said that 450 Mws Baglihar power project is on the trial run and is providing only 150 Mws of power presently. Seli said the distress curtailment in power has become imperative due to the instructions received by the department from Central Electricity Regulatory Commission New Delhi to stop overdrawing of power from grids and has also instructed to submit report regarding the over drawls from the grid by Regional Load Despatch centres in this connection. He said the commission has impressed upon the state utilities indulging over drawal to maintain discipline. Warning those consumers indulging in power theft, the Development Commissioner Power said that the department is soon launching intensive drive against these. Meanwhile, strongly resenting the long duration power cuts, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the authorities concerned to act fact and set the things right lest it is too late and beyond anybody’s control. In a press release, the Chamber said that people feel deceived as the department and the government had repeatedly asserted that once the electronic metres are installed, the consumers would be relieved of frequent power cuts. The Chamber further said that the PDD’s announcement of over 13 hour power curtailment will adversely hit every section of the consumers as well as the industrial consumers, particularly when the election schedule has already been announced. There seems no justification in the department’s action of resorting to curtailments as the people who have already been alienated and neglected may resort to some course to show their resentment and anguish which may be of no body’s liking, the Chamber cautioned. |
