| Uri residents upbeat about Assembly elections | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT URI (BARAMULLA), Oct 23: Though electioneering is subdued in this high voter turnout constituency, but people are upbeat about the Assembly elections and determined to turn up in large numbers on December 7 to vote for a representative who can ensure development for their region along the LoC. "We will vote and we will vote in numbers to elect our MLA. Government will be formed in the state irrespective of whether we take part in elections or not. It is better to choose someone rather than to have someone represent us by chance," Abdul Latief, who hails from remote village of Jabla in this border area, told PTI. Latief said while separatist politics "were relevant" in Uri, elections were to mitigate the day to day problems faced by the residents, especially of border and remote areas. "Development in city will take place but the border areas get neglected.... It is important to have someone representing us in the corridors of power so that he or she can draw the attention of decision makers to our problems as well," he said. Uri constituency has largely remained unaffected by separatist politics since militancy erupted in the state, but protests were witnessed during the recent agitation over the Amarnath land transfer row. More than 66 per cent votes were polled in the 2002 Assembly polls while in 2004 Lok Sabha elections the voter turn out increased by four percentile points. |
